Drugs in Society – Unit 4

Discussion:

Currently there is critical attention being paid to the asset forfeiture laws and procedures in place legally and that have been employed by law enforcement for some time now. These laws allow law enforcement to seize assets accumulated with the use of proceeds and profits from drug trafficking, for the purposes of this course. (There are similar procedures for fraud, environmental crimes, etc.)  Criticism is being aimed at law reinforcement’s abuse of the process and a focus on “financing” the basic responsibility of enforcing the drug control laws on the books.  If my statements aren’t too confusing, respond.  Are the criticisms valid?  Does law enforcement focus on the “prizes” rather than on the duty to enforce the law?  Is asset forfeiture a reasonable tool to fight the drug problem?  Can it be abused?

In your opinion, how effective has “source control” been?
